Custodian 1
About the Position: The Custodian 1 performs custodial assignments to maintain the cleanliness and care of the institution's state funded academic facilities.  These duties are performed in a team cleaning model with each Custodian 1 position rotating through all of the essential job functions as listed in the position responsibilities.

This position is part of a Washington Federation of State Employees bargaining unit.  New employees are required to meet the membership requirements of the current collective bargaining agreement within 30 calendar days of employment.

Working Hours:  Normal scheduled work period is 5:00 am to 1:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  Hours and shift times may be changed at any time with proper notice per the bargaining unit agreement.  Responding to needs on campus will be expected beyond normally scheduled work periods, 24 hours each day 7 days per week.

About the College/Department: Facilities Management
Position Responsibilities:
Will be assigned one or any combination of the following four distinct functions on any given day. 
  • Light Duty Function
    • Empty trash and reinstall liners
    • Wipe doorknobs and light switches
    • Dust all horizontal and vertical surfaces
    • Pick up paper clips, paper and pencils from floor, spot clean door glass
    • Position trash can in a strategic location for the utility specialist to pick up and take to the dumpster In classrooms, wipe down tables, tablet armchairs, and clean white or chalk boards, clean erasers and restock with chalk
  • Vacuum Function
    • Check each trash can before vacuuming under it
    • Vacuum all traffic areas and spot vacuum all other areas according to the vacuuming schedule
    • Remove crumbs, ashes, or other spills on furniture
    • Reposition all furniture correctly, turn out lights upon completion of the room and secure area as required
  • Restroom Function .
    • Restock toilet paper and refill all dispensers as needed
    • Empty trash, clean and sanitize all fixtures, clean mirrors
    • Spot clean and sanitize partitions and doors
    • Sweep and mop tile floors
    • Check all fixtures and make a note of any damage or burned out light bulbs
  • Utility Function – the Utility Function is the most varied. This function may include any of the above plus:
    • Interim floor and carpet care
    • Spot cleaning of carpets and haul trash to the dumpster
    • Polish stairs
    • Vacuum or sweep stairwells
    • Clean door glass
    • Restore and maintain floors
    • Autoscrub and burnish
  • Periodic Maintenance – Under direct supervision and using appropriate methodology and equipment perform interim cleaning maintenance or restoration of all floor types on campus and any assigned deep cleaning
  • Clean and restock custodial closet
  • Daily operator-level maintenance and use of custodial equipment as required
  • Move furniture, supplies and tools on an incidental basis
  • Help maintain campus security by coordinating with public safety office to lock and unlock buildings, report unauthorized occupants
  • Report need for repair and/or maintenance
  • Wash interior or easily accessible exterior windows
  • Perform cleaning and related activities in assigned exterior areas using hand-operated tools or small power equipment to remove debris or to sweep sidewalks or stairs; any snow removal will be limited to major exterior academic building entrances immediately adjacent to the exterior doors
  • Follow current University policies and procedures including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Operate cleaning equipment safely and without damage to the equipment; floor machine, carpet extractor with a wand, auto scrubber and pressure washer
  • Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation to include, but not limited to:
    • Effective communication skills
    • Stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, standing, walking, climbing, twisting, stretching, and reaching
    • Being mobile and standing on your feet 100% of the assigned shift
    • Repeated pushing, pulling and lifting of 50 pounds
    • Using a backpack vacuum, upright vacuum, and extractor with wand for two hours without rest
    • Within an 8-hour shift must be able to move freely from one floor to the next using stairs and from one building to another over uneven surfaces
    • Fit in tight places in order to clean urinals or toilets in a restroom stall including behind the fixtures on the floor
    • Perform standard routine cleaning in all of the area types including, stairs, restrooms, offices, classrooms, public areas, laboratories, gymnasiums, and locker rooms
  • Clean light covers and diffusers
  • Project clean multiple seating
  • Project clean walk-off mats
  • Clean lockers and benches
  • May collect recyclable materials
  • May set up and remove furniture before special events
  • May check students in and out; issue linen and bedding; keep student rooms inventory records; change and make beds
  • Must be able to work any shift
  • Willing to obtain certification in asbestos/mold/lead abatement
  • Use typical custodial tools and equipment to accomplish job tasks: broom, mop, brushes, dust mops, sponges, rags, ladder, wet mop bucket, backpack vacuum, upright vacuum, wide area vacuum, carpet extractor, rotary floor machine, custodial cart, spray bottles, wringers and squeegees
  • Work independently and in work groups
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Decision-making ability
  • Follow a routine
  • Mix chemicals accurately according to label directions
  • Work well with diverse populations .
  • Flexibility to change shift with appropriate notice
  • Comply with WWU policies and procedures, state laws and state regulations as required to successfully accomplish the duties of this position
  • Accurately document work time on all assigned tasks and comply with positive time reporting requirements
  • Perform related duties as required
Required Qualifications:
  • Effectively read, write, and follow oral and/or written instructions as provided by management
  • Ability to perform the essential functions
Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year + experience in housekeeping, janitorial, general or building maintenance or custodial work in an educational environment
  • One year + experience in a team cleaning environment
  • Working knowledge or ability to provide custodial duties in a commercial and/or institutional setting
