Student Services Assistant Advisor
About the Position: This is a temporary, 6-month position.  The Student Services Advisor facilitates the well-being and integration of international students in our community during the course of their participation in WWU 's Extended Education Programs, as well as handling general office duties for all Extended Education programs. The advisor predominantly manages on-campus issues such as (but not limited to) academic advising, admissions, attendance, grade-tracking, housing and dining services, orientation, registration, student accounts, and access to university resources.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate international student integration into the Bellingham and Western communities
  • Research, develop and implement a wide range of student activities and events
  • Prepare materials and presentations for a wide variety of student orientations/workshops
  • Serve as bilingual (Japanese) translator for AUAP students in a variety of situations including on-call 24/7 for emergencies and student medical needs
  • Guide non-traditional students (and their dependents if applicable) in resolution of a wide variety of university/community issues, for ex: academic progress, campus/community resources, health, housing, travel plans, border crossing and Visa issues
  • Assist in the coordination of the Student Employees, including recruiting, hiring, training and evaluation of the AUAP International Peer Advisors
  • Provide clear communication with students, staff and faculty re: Extended Education programs, policies, procedures, and program participation details
  • Work with students in advising groups and individually to address inquiries concerning program offerings, academics, admissions, attendance, registration procedures, course fees & deadlines, health/insurance requirements
  • Assist with non-traditional student registration, registration systems and data-base tracking
  • Work with Language & Cultural programs in hiring, training and supervising student employees
  • Work with Language & Cultural programs in program development and scheduling
  • Set up student employees (and other drivers) with Van Safety Training, ensure compliance with safety policies, and coordinate for student pickups at the Bellingham airport, bus/shuttle or train as necessary
  • Plan seasonal activities – for ex: skiing Mt Baker (winter), Tulip Festival (spring)
  • Liaison as needed between E.E. and student resource offices (ex: Health Center, VU, Outdoor Center)
  • Assist instructors, directors with special requests (ex: scheduling, testing students)
  • Publicize and coordinate campus events, including International Opportunities Fair and Info Fair Supervise and participate in the student events and activities
  • Interpret policies & procedures for persons with questions concerning university and Extended Education programs; including basic questions re: SEVIS and Visa policies
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Japanese language skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Event planning experience
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and proven ability to quickly process and prioritize expectations for support
  • Competency in the use of Microsoft Office, including: Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access Experience with diverse student populations and/or experience with student advisement/teaching
  • Education in English, TESOL, Linguistic, and/or a second language or other related field of study
  • 5 years of safe driving experience
  • High tolerance for ambiguity
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Higher Education and/or working with college-level language and cultural programs
  • Experience with international student populations
  • MOS Certification
  • Japanese Language - Verbal and Written Proficiency
  • Experience developing and using Social Media modules for international student recruitment
