Manager of Information Technology
About the Position:
The Manager of Information Technology in the College of Business and Economics (CBE) is responsible for the planning, management, direction and control of information technology operations and resources for the College.  The position requires a person who is capable of providing a high level of technical support and services to CBE's community of faculty, students, staff and administration.  The position resides in CBE's Office of Information Systems and Technology Services. 

About the College/Department: Founded in 1976, CBE provides high-quality programs in business and economics, focusing primarily on undergraduate instruction. There are five departments in the College: Accounting, Decision Sciences, Economics, Finance & Marketing, and Management. Degrees offered at the main campus in Bellingham include BAs in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, and Financial Economics; a BS in Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management; an MBA; and a Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAcc). The College also oversees an MBA program in Everett, WA and, effective fall 2014, a BA in General Business in Poulsbo, WA. CBE faculty and students participate in various interdisciplinary programs as exemplified by a new university-wide minor in Entrepreneurship and a major in Business & Sustainability.

The College employs 60 tenure and tenure-track faculty at the Bellingham campus with over 95% having a research doctorate. In addition, 17 administrative and professional staff work for CBE. There are approximately 1,200 full-time students in the undergraduate program and 80 students in the Master’s programs.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Management, planning, coordination and support
    • Planning: Support the CBE mission through the identification and development of appropriate information systems and infrastructure
    • Requirements analysis: Consult with users to determine functional and technical specifications for CBE information systems
    • System acquisition and procurement: Recommend and procure information technology products for CBE acquisition
    • System development and implementation: Develop and/or implement new information systems and technology programs
    • Technical support and maintenance: Maintain and support hardware, software, applications (e.g., CBE Information System), backup systems, print systems, and wireless notebook environments
    • Technology coordination: Coordinate the integration of new and existing information systems and technology within CBE and between CBE and other units at WWU
    • Communicate planned technology changes and associated implications to the CBE community
    • Computer lab management: Manage and support CBE student computer labs
    • Vendor relations and management: Work with vendors to resolve technology/system-related issues and problems
    • Mobile technology support: Assist and train faculty, administrators, staff and students with respect to mobile technology systems
    • Network administration: Assist with administration of CBE’s network resources, including monitoring and enhancing operating environments to ensure optimal performance
    • Budget coordination: Coordinate the technology budget and funds
    • Management of offsite technology: Support technology used by CBE’s offsite centers and programs
    • Webmaster: Serve as the webmaster for the CBE website
  • Project management
    • Project management: Manage assigned CBE information systems and technology projects, develop project goals and objectives, and establish project schedules
    • Quality control: Coordinate the creation of quality control mechanisms
    •  Resource balancing: Oversee resource allocations so that a portfolio of information systems and technology projects are developed on time and within budget
    • Compliance: Maintain regular contact and coordinate with appropriate WWU stakeholders and college departments to ensure that CBE projects comply with WWU policies and procedures
    • Customer feedback and continual improvement: Manage and coordinate client feedback and project evaluation activities to ensure continuing innovation and improvement
  • Support of specialized technical CBE programs and resources
    • Support specialized technical resources for MIS and Decision Sciences programs: Manage CBE’s wireless notebook classroom resources; install, update and troubleshoot dedicated hardware systems and software used for teaching including (but not limited to) Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft IIS, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint / PerformancePoint, SAP, Microsoft Visio, and Visible Analyst
    • Support dedicated teaching and research laboratories: Manage lab and classroom resources for programs such as the CBE Behavioral Research Lab, CBE Finance Lab, and the CBE Western Experimental Economics Laboratory
  • Personnel management
    • Supervisory responsibilities: Recruit, select, train and supervise student employees to assist with CBE's Office of Information Systems and Technology
Required Qualifications:
  • A completed Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science or a related field, or significant, relevant experience beyond the minimum stated below
  • At least five years full time experience in an Information Technology Systems position (two years working half time will be considered as one year of full time experience)
  • Demonstrated track record of providing high quality technical customer service and support
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage technical projects
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively with a variety of constituents when writing speaking, and presenting
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a variety of constituents in a professional work environment
  • A knowledge of the business environment, as demonstrated either by academic background or work experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA or Master’s Degree in a related discipline
  • CompTIA A+ certification
  • CompTIA Network+ certification
  • A thorough understanding of Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Office products
  • A thorough understanding of directory services and user management concepts
  • Experience with mobile devices, platforms and providers
  • Experience in a similar higher education environment
  • Experience with server level hardware, including RAID & SAN concepts
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience with Linux
  • Experience with MySQL and Microsoft SharePoint / PerformancePoint
  • Experience working with 802.11 Wireless Networks
