Geochemistry Research Associate 2
About the Position: Applications are invited for a Geochemistry Research Associate 2 in the Geology Department at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham, WA.  The Geology Department supports Western's mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities.  We encourage applications from candidates from underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in this position.

The primary roles of this position will be to train, supervise, and assist students, faculty and visitors in the operation of the LA-ICP-MS for geoscience applications, to collaborate with faculty and students on research projects, to develop and pursue projects and proposals for external funding, and to refine and develop laboratory methods and procedures for geoscience applications of geochemistry.

About the College/Department: The Geology Department offers BA, BS and MS programs in Geology, Geophysics, and Science Education, serving 200 majors.  The department has strengths in field and lab based teaching and research in geomorphology, igneous petrology, geophysics, hydrogeology and environmental/engineering geology, planetary geology, sedimentology, science education, and structure/tectonics.  Additional information about our programs can be found at http://cse.wwu.edu/geology

WWU is a primarily undergraduate state institution (about 15,000 students) in Bellingham, WA, 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia and 90 miles north of Seattle.  WWU has longstanding and growing program in the geosciences, preparing more professional geologists than any other institution of higher education in Washington.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and assist geology students and faculty in the operation of the LA-ICP-MS
  • Assist and educate geology students and faculty in LA-ICP-MS data reduction and evaluation of data quality
  • Contribute to geology student use/supervision for SEM-based research
  • Assist and educate research users on sample preparation for LA-ICP-MS and SEM
  • Evaluate analytical quality and troubleshoot instrument problems

Additional job functions (for Ph.D. hire only)
  • Oversee undergraduate research (MS/PhD) and graduate research
  • Maintain an externally funded independent research program in his/her discipline
  • Submit collaborative proposals to upgrade and advance the instrumentation
  • Serve as PI or Co-PI on Dept proposals to conduct LA-ICP-MS research
  • Teach a materials and methods course based on Dept/Sci-Tech/AMSEC instruments
  • Service, AMSEC member

Required Qualifications:
  • M.S. in geoscience or physical science
  • Minimum 1 year of experience maintaining LA-ICP-MS instrumentation and performing data reduction for geological samples
  • Computer skills, including some programming experience (e.g. Glitter, or other LA-ICP-MS data reduction software)
  • Demonstrated commitment to work effectively with a diverse student body
  • Good oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in geoscience
  • Several years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing LA-ICP-MS
  • Experience with data reduction routines and data quality control
  • Ability and interest in working with other interdisciplinary programs in materials science, marine and environmental science
  • A geoscience publication record with LA-ICP-MS analyses and/or methodologies
  • Experience with electron microscopy and its applications in the geosciences
